The short Story Starts by using the first five sentences to present the weather. â€Å"Three weeks of windless sun†. This establishes the overall setting for the reader. The setting is basically described as being a hot summer day, which has lasted for three weeks, with no cooling wind, and the suns heat burning on the ground. The cooling and moving water is in contrast to the clouds and the wind. â€Å"Nothing moves except the water†. There is a longer introduction to the water but it continuous from a different perspective. This leads to an introduction of both the water but also the main character. â€Å"She sits at her desk in the back room gazing out at the river. Where it rounds the first bend there’s an eddy as the current twists out into the middle†¦ . J. S Butler is using sentences like the one above to set focus on the importance of the protagonist and the setting and thereby indirectly ailing the reader that the woman and the lake are of significance to the story. The main character is a woman who is sitting at a desk with her window open, which gives her a view to a lake nearby. Throughout the story, her job seems to b e of less and less importance to her; meanwhile her interest in the lake grows. This comes to show in some of her thoughts while working: â€Å"No one has passed for at least three hours†. Unlike her work, the woman feels some kind of fascination towards the lake while working. Whether or not she is ratiocinating from her work by using the summer heat, as an excuse to take a swim in the lake is unclear at this point, but she – despite her fear of being watched while swimming -? makes the decision to go down to the lake. All ready before making this decision she had put her swimwear near her, which indicates that she had had the idea of taking a swim before, but had been reluctant about actually going. However, taking the initiative to go doesn’t mean she overcame her fear. Due to the fact that it’s a hot summer day, she defies her fear and goes into the lake. Out on the river path she takes long fast steps†. In addition, she is very aware Of the fact that if she hesitates, she might turn around and go back to her desk. In the water, she finds a swan. Its beauty amazes her and while knowing that it can be a very dangerous animal, she feels drawn by the fear. While trying to get closer to the swan, she spends a lot of time in the lake, which gradually helps her overcome her fear. The fact that she slowly overcomes her fear the first time and her new interest for the swan, she found the courage to go into the lake once more, and once more, and once more, each time getting closer to the swan and later on close enough to touch it. The woman’s observations made from a distance indicate that the swan is dead, but also alive. â€Å"It doesn’t hiss, nor arch its wings†. This brings a somewhat mysterious element to the story. The swan of course is a symbol, and the lag of movement and the fact that the swan doesn’t really notice the woman, could suggest that it is dead already. However, warm blood blends into the water, which indicates that the swan is alive. She thinks -? and the orator describes it as if – the swan where caught up in some of the fishermen’s net, as it flew down onto the water. The swan has probably been caught up in the net for some time and has been suffering a lot. Like the woman, the swan, was probably fascinated by the waters beauty and decided to fly onto the Water. The Woman and the swan have both been drawn towards the water, because of the heat, but the swan is more relatable to the women then one might think. The woman can relate to the feeling of being held back. Of course, there is a entrant between being held back physically and held back by fear. Meanwhile the swan is trapped, the woman began to spend more and more time observing the swan, and be more and more attached to it. â€Å"She cannot stop thinking about the swan†. The fear she felt disappeared, as if it was a decreasing exponential equation to the time she spends in the lake. As a product of this decreasing fear, the woman began to untie herself from the reluctant and fear controlled life she had had. â€Å"Untwisting the line where the bird bound itself in its struggle†. There are many similarities between the caught up swan and the â€Å"caught up† woman. They are both struggling to get free and their endings have somewhat similar traits. Without the help of the woman, the swan could not get free. And without the â€Å"help† of the swan, the woman probably wouldn’t have been freed from her fear of swimming in the lake. The theme of fear in the story is expressed by the main character s development. Other subsystems such as person development, mental freedom, helping others and the beauty of nature, are all shown in the legislation the woman establishes with the swan. Of course, the overall themes are fear and overcoming fear, but also themes such as unhappiness and maybe even the female role as the weak gender comes to show as possible themes, however these are somewhat out of focus and thereby not central themes. Tess of the DUrbervilles Chapter 35 Paper 1. When Tess first tells Angel of her confession, he does not seem to comprehend what she has just said. He gets up and stirs the fire; Clare performed the irrelevant act of stirring the fire; the intelligence had not even yet got to the bottom of him. The confession seems so utterly unbelievable to him that he cannot take it in and seems to be in shock, although he just told Tess a revelation of the same sort about himself. This is the first clue that Angel had an idealised version in his head of Tess. When he first speaks he says O you cannot be out of your mind! You ought to be! Yet you are not This shows that he would have, or would rather have, believed that she was mad other than what she had just told him was true. This also shows his disbelief of how she could have done that. He seems to be severely changed after she tells him; His face had withered. His face has physically changed, described as withered as opposed with the readers previous view that he was handsome. This cou ld also indicate that he is not going to act as he was before as he has changed.This is true as the chapter carries on. Tess tells him she has forgiven him, for what is the same or possibly a worse act than what she has done, and when she asks him if he has forgive her, he says: O Tess, forgiveness does not apply to the case! You were one person; now you are another. My God how can forgiveness meet such a grotesque prestidigitation as that! Although he accepts that she has forgiven him for the same thing, he does not forgive her. He believes that what she has done is a lot worse than what she has done. When he says she is a different person, this shows that he thinks that the person he believed was Tess would not have done this, so he says that she must be a different person. He believed too much in his idealised version of Tess that this revelation is too much of a shock to him. Later he repeats; The woman I have been loving is not you. Here it is clear that he was only in love w ith the Tess in his mind, not for her actual self as she loves him.When she starts crying, he is relieved at it. This implies that because she wasnt crying, instead of her being strong as she was, it makes her seem less innocent and vulnerable, but as she does he is glad that she is showing some sense of emotion at the event. He does not know what to do now, which shows he is still in shock. However, it is obvious that he has changed, as he is sarcastic o her, and also starts denoting her because of her class, again showing how he does not believe she is still the woman he loved. He also begins to class her as her DUrberville roots were; Decrepit families imply decrepit wills, decrepit conduct. He is labelling her into all the things he does not like, although he loved everything about her only a few hours ago. He now sees her as something entirely different and changed. At the end of the chapter when she goes to her room, he almost goes in there to speak to her, but he catches a gl ance at an old portrait of a lady from the DUrberville family. He sees this and immediately compares it to Tess, as if this must be how she is; Sinister design lurked in the womans features, a concentrated purpose of revenge on the other sex. Before he had an idealised image of Tess, and now he has adopted an image of Tess that she is evil.2. In chapter XXV Hardy uses different techniques to describe the change in relationship between Tess and Angel. One of the first things he uses is personification of the surroundings in the room, to help explain how the surroundings reflect the change in Angels attitude towards Tess; But the complexion even of external things seemed to suffer transmutation as her announcement progressed. This is talking about how the atmosphere in the room has changed, but also how this reflects the change that Angel has gone through. What before was a happy room is now portrayed has being changed for the worse. In the chapter previous the fire was described as h aving a red-coaled glow. However now it is described as; The fire in the grate looked impish demonically funny, as if it did not care about her strait. The fender grinned idly, as if it too did not care. Here the fire is described as being somehow evil, like an imp or a demon. This is reflecting how Tess and Angels relationship has changed for the worse, but may also be reflecting how angel now views Tess as evil. For most of the chapter, it is just dialogue between Tess and Angel. This shows how the atmosphere seems to have changed and also to reflect the drama of what is going on.Both of the descriptions of Tess and Angel have changed Angels face has become withered, and Tesss lips have become pale. This could reflect how Hardy wants the characters to be viewed Angel as not being as virtuous as the reader had first thought, and Tess is portrayed as more innocent because her lips are no longer red. This is significant because one of the things that Angel commented on liking about her was her mouth.Right at the end of the chapter Hardy talks about the light. Before in the book he has talked about the light, especially in the morning when Tess has been looking out over the countryside, which always seemed to imply hope for the future, but now Hardy says; The night came in, and took u p its place there, unconcerned and indifferent. This seems to be implying that this is the end of the happiest period of Tesss life, which started with Angel and is now ending with Angel.3. Previously in the book, Angel was seen as being different from his brothers and other men at the time by being open minded and not conforming to contemporary attitudes. However, his reaction to Tesss confession is contradictory to his earlier behaviour, although it is typical of attitudes of Victorian men at the time.After Angel tells Tess of his admission of being with another woman out of wedlock, Tess is relieved because what she did was the same, or even not as bad, as what he did. However, he goes into shock at the reality that she is not so pure, so sweet, so virginal as what he thought she was. This goes back to how he had an idealised image of what Tess was. In those days, it was much more socially unacceptable for a woman to have sex out of wedlock than it was for a man a woman was seen as being the property of the man. Tess also shows this opinion, as she says to Angel; I dont belong to you any more, then. This shows the point that men were seen as the superior and therefore in charge of the women. Another change in Angels behaviour is his view on class.Before, he wanted to marry Tess, even though she was of a lower social class than he was. He even tried to convince his father that a farming woman would be of better aid to him in the running of a farm. However, he is now judging Tess because of her class, as he says; You almost make me say you are an unapprehending peasant woman. Here Angel is being demeaning towards Tess because of her class, which never mattered to him before. This is reflective of contemporary social attitudes at the time, but this shows how changed Angel is because he is now showing beliefs typical of men in that era, whereas before he prided himself on being more open-minded.

Although the word ontology is a term used more fluently from the 17th-century tradition of thought, it can be traced back to Aristotle where he identifies that there is an ‘episteme’ that need only investigate being as being and nothing more. With the tractional loss caused by epistemological thought, ontology lends to metaphysics what it had lost; the objective science of being as such, as identified by Peter van Inwagen (Inwagen). Nonetheless, the grounds for epistemology are not dismissible. The arguments against structural universals and the dire need to accommodate empirical interference have come to have an overbearing reach into the crux of shaping existential truths. The fact of ‘relational’ truths, as David Lewis calls them, places a larger burden on the validity of truth as a philosopher might know it, an endeavor to achieve ‘improved’ truths. In a traditional sense, it is easy to relegate it to its tight premise whereby ‘justified true belief’ is the essence of knowledge of existence; it would not be quite fair to let it remain thus encapsulated. The Short Story Of Mother To Son English Literature Essay There are so many great stories, short plays and poems to critique within this text book. The poem I chose to critique was Mother to Son by Langston Hughes. He was born James Langston Hughes on February 1st 1902, in Joplin Missouri. James was a member of an abolitionist family. Hughes attended central high school in Cleveland Ohio, but he started writing poetry when he was just in the eighth grade. During this time, he was even selected as class poet by his fellow classmates. Langstons father did not think that his son could make a living on writing poems alone, so he enrolled him in an engineering program at Columbia University. Soon after, Langston withdrew from the program in order to pursue his writing career. Shortly after, Langston published his first poem which was his most famous, The Negro Speaks of Rivers. Langstons work got so much recognition it appeared in the NAACP and other publications. He was a prolific writer and throughout his life, he wrote sixteen books of poems, two novels, three collections of short stories, four volumes of editorial and documentary fiction and the list goes on. With all these prior knowledge of Hughes, I was able to understand his writing style a bit more clearly and grasp his theme within the poem. The theme for Hughes poem is, Even though life has been hard for the mother and she could not see what was ahead, she still encourages her son to continue on in life because she made it through. I love the way that Langston, so clearly depicted this theme within the poem and while you read it you can get a clear sense of exactly what is going on and you may even seem as if it were your mother speaking to you. The poem is self narrated and one can feel the love and emotion from the character. It has a strong meaning behind it because the mom cares for her child and wants him to continue on in life and to never give up. In life, mothers always wish the best for their children and never want them to fall by the way side or be led astray. Every mother wants for the child to be successful in everything that they do. It makes a mom heart broken or feels as if they failed, when their child fails. A critic by the name of R. Baxter Miller says In this poem the woman also represents the continuation of the race. Having given life to the next generation, the mother represents a figure of female strength, affirmation and generational continuity. Another critic by the name of James Baldwin says, Hughes is at his best in lyrics like Mother to Son. The poems lyrics elements include a first person speaker, an expression of intense personal emotion and a belief in spiritual transcendence of time and early circumstance. Both critics are correct and within the poem you can see exactly what they are referring to. The tone of the poem is full of love but also has intense warning. The mother wants the best for her son and Hughes clearly depicts that within his poem. The poem starts off by the mother informing the son that life for her has been hard. She states Well son, Ill tell you; Life for me aint been no crystal stair. Its had its tacks in it and splinters and boards torn upà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ (Meyer 1168) The mother, just like every mom who has had a hard time in life, tells her child what she has gone through; her trials and tribulations. She goes on to describe her life by saying the boards were torn up there was no carpet in places, which symbolizes her emptiness, how tough it was and chaotic. Think of a house if you were looking to buy one and you came across a house with the boards up in the air, mold on the walls, roof is leaking, insects infested the place and there was no carpet where carpet should be. Chances are you would turn your head the other way and look for something better, for you would know this is not the way a house should be. You could never make your family stay in this house for you know that they deserve better. Just li ke the mom she talks about the hard parts of her life, but she is trying to do better even in spite of whatever it is that she is going through. She goes on to say that shes been climbing and reaching landings to make it. Meaning shes been going ahead trying to do better and make something out of her situation and she is not giving up. Sometimes in life we have to realize that our situation is not the worst thing on earth. Even if we were going through the loss of a job, the death of a child, the loss of the house, being homeless, starvation or battling a deadly disease. We should realize that we can make it through in spite of. The mom warns her son to stay focused and persevere. She states, dont you turn back. Dont you set down on the steps because you find its kinder hard. (Meyer 1168) You can hear in her tone that she does not want him to ever give up or turn back while hes experiencing his tough times. Every mom encourages their child to go through whatever the situation may be and to never look back and say we cant do it. Sometimes as a child, we may think the problem is just too big for us to deal with or that we cant get through it. Sometimes we get weak and weary when our situation looks like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Even though it looks as if we cant go on, we have to remember the warnings that our mothers have said to us. We have to remember when they tell us to be better than them in everything that we do. Mothers try hard to get as far as they can in life, educationally and physically. Every mom tells their child to go higher and do more. So if your mom got a bachelors degree and made only 30,000 a year, she would want you to get a masters or a PH. D and make 60,000 a year. We have to remember when our mothers tell us to be better than they were. An example would be if your mom use to mistreat you as a child excessively beat you or put you down every time you needed her, she would want for you to treat your children with love and compassion. Your mother would also want you to be there for your child and uplift them in times of need. Anything that your mom did that you did not agree with, you should do better when you have your children. After all the warnings and encouragement, the mother ends of the poem by saying Ise still climbin, and life for me ain;t been no crystal stair.(Meyer 1168) A critic by the name of Alishia talks on her belief of what the crystal stair symbolizes. She states, I believe the crystal stair reference means that crystal is transparent, you can see the other side clearly through crystal. If her life was no crystal stair, she didnt know what the outcome was going to be, she just knew that she had to keep moving and keep working f or the best life she could make for herself. I agree with Alishia because if something is crystal you can see right through it and since the mom says life hasnt been a crystal stair she cant see through her life or see what is to come. When you cant see whats ahead of you, it makes it hard to plan out what you will do and prepare yourself accordingly. If life was a crystal stair for the mom, then should would be better prepared for everything and have time to plan out a solution to all her problems but life is never like that we never know whats to come. All we know is that when it does come our way we must not fall back, or get scared and give up. We must keep on going and persevere to the end so we can feel good that we accomplished something and made it out on top. Not only will we get personal satisfaction, but our mothers will be satisfied. This is what the main theme is for the poem Mother to son. Its all about us making it until the end and never giving up because we cant see whats ahead. The poem was very meaningful and motivational and Hughes did a wonderful job displaying this within his poem. There has been much discussion in the news recently over whether or not to vaccinate children. One argument is that vaccines are not safe and contribute to autism. The vast majority of people continue to believe childhood vaccines are safe and choose to have their children vaccinated. If deadly diseases are going to continue to be prevented, it is necessary to have children vaccinated. Vaccines are important for preventing deadly diseases. If a child is not vaccinated against preventable diseases, not only is the child at risk but also the entire community is at risk. This would include newborns in the community who are too young to have been vaccinated, people who cannot receive vaccines due to medical reasons, and people who may not have responded to a vaccine. With more people opting not to vaccinate their childre n, there has been a rise in the outbreak of preventable childhood diseases such as measles in certain communities. This Chicano movement is one of the biggest accomplishments of Latinos to this day. This riot happened during the civil rights era with the main focus of getting rights for farm workers and educational rights for the students. Before this event happened there were already some supreme court cases that passed laws in favor of Latinos and segregated schools. In the article â€Å"History of the Chicano movement† published by Nadra Kareem Nittle published on September 10, 2018 it states the following, â€Å"Their activism actually predates the 1960s. In the 1940s and ’50s, for example, Hispanics won two major legal victories.† Both of these victories were in relation to ending segregation in schools with every racial group not just blacks and whites. Latinos have gone through a lot to try and get equal education rights. Even to this day there are college and universities that discriminate against Latinos. A lot of us are put down saying we aren’t smart enough and that we could never graduate college just because our families don’t have an education. Thanks to the Chicano movement in 1961 we were able to have a sort of better opportunity although it wasn’t perfect afterwards, we to this day are still working on getting the rights and equality we deserve in the education system. The Passaic riot took place in 1969. It happened in the state of New Jersey. The story was caused after a couple of major events. The first event that built up to this riot is the story of when a 12-person Puerto Rican family was evicted from their house. There was also a story of a fireman who said racist things about Puerto Ricans to a newspaper article a couple months after the first incident. In this article written by Natalie Delgadillo she talks about how the things Hispanics go through aren’t really shined a light on. There aren’t many articles on this particular riot because many people don’t like to admit that it happened. Even Latinos themselves like to act like this event never took place. That is why we never found out much information about it. The Roosevelt park riot took place on June 13, 1971. The riot began when policemen wanted to arrested a young man standing in a big crowd of people. When this happened, it started as a small dispute and ended in a big fight. The policemen ended up firing at the crowd injuring around 9 people. After this the crowd ended up in downtown rioting and causing many damages. This riot ended up with many many injuries and very expensive damages to properties and more. Yet, it wasn’t really talked about. In the article â€Å"Forgotten Latino Urban Riots and Why They Can Happen Again† written by Aaron G and published on May 2nd, 2016 he states the following, â€Å"Most Americans are unaware of Latino urban riots because they fall outside of the black-white binary.† While this is true it still affects the Latino community in many ways. Most of the racism and discrimination the Hispanic community faces is not talked about because it isn’t considered racism or it is jus t not cared for. Many Americans think racism can only be a thing if you are a white or black person, this is actually a very unfortunate thing because my people go through a lot but aren’t helped. On the other hand, the black community has support and protests against this racism towards them. There is many people who act like Hispanics are not discriminated again, because of this Hispanics get no help. The discrimination from the past to the discrimination today is basically the same. Although today it is not as bad as it was before and yes, we do have more help in the education system there is still much discrimination. Even more now that Donald trump is our president he has brought back that racism we dealt with back in the 1960s and 1970s. We again have to fight for our rights as humans and as American citizens, just like we did in the Chicano movement of 1960.
